ABOUT ME

I am environmental ecologist and ornithologist who specializes in tropical ecology.  I'm known as the "bird guy" in the department.  My main research interest focuses on using birds as environmental indicators of habitat change and condition.

My current projects include bird community dynamics in rainforests in Southern Belize as well as using Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAV-drones) and invertebrates to determine ecosystem control as it relates to the northernmost and only-known Harpy Eagle nesting pair in Belize. Other projects in Belize include Cacao (chocolate) agroforestry restoration, and migratory Wood Thrush wintering in Belize.

My other major project focuses on populations of Atlantic Painted Buntings in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida.  Please click the Painted Bunting Observer Team Website for information.

Another project examines long-term environment change in Burgundy, France due to climate and human modified landscapes from the Medieval Warming Period to the present. By using historical maps, computer modeling, remote sensing, and ground-based high resolution imagery, we are beginning to understand how a series of 11th and 12th century Romanesque churches were established and how the medieval landscape allowed for their construction.
